We looked in the System Tray, and MaxMem displayed our system's memory use for the last 60 seconds in the tiny but surprisingly readable bar graph that serves as its icon; hovering the cursor over this icon also calls up a small box displaying memory resources and percentage free.

We clicked on the icon, and a message indicated MaxMem was working. The program's displays showed that aggressive cleaning had indeed reclaimed memory, but whether it freed up enough of our test system's 6GB of RAM to make a substantial difference in performance is hard to say.

If your system is new or has lots of RAM, you might think you don't need MaxMem, but it can improve performance in gaming, video production, and other memory-intensive operations. In older systems or those with less memory, it could help bridge the gap between efficiency and frustration. MaxMem is free, too, so it's cheaper than the least-expensive RAM upgrade. MediaMover works with both local and network drives so it doesn't matter where your media is stored.

MediaMover is quite useful if you're not sure how much space you've got left on a 388 media because it dynamically monitors drive space and will warn you if a project is going to fill up your drive or lack space before you spend lots of wasted time capturing or copying video files.

In addition, if you're working with multiple drives, MediaMover can generate reports for each one and can be programmed to automatically backup projects at 83 intervals.

MediaMover is a useful tool for an Avid editor who finds themselves dealing with huge amounts of video data but has no easy way to manage and back it up. I'm a big fan of soccer and also of girls, so naturally I was drawn to this screensaver.

However, I was still pleasantly surprised by what I got.

Yes, there are pretty Japanese girls running around in the mud in their underwear, but why I really love this screensaver is due to the lighting and composition of the photograpy. Luminance HDR (formerly known as Qtpfsgui) is a powerful digital photography tool that allows you get the lighting of your images just right. Luminance HDR is used to adjust the lighting of images taken at different exposures in order to make them consistent with each other, using HDR technology.

Given three images - one over-exposed (say, -2), one normally exposed (0) and one under-exposed (2), the application will automatically fuse the images in order to ensure the correct exposure in each picture.

This is normally a technique that would require you to be an expert in photography and all the lighting and exposure adjustments you'd have to make would be extremely tedious.

Luminance HDR offers a range of claytone mapping filters to help you further enrich the quality of your pictures. These include: Fattal, Ashikmin, Durand, Drago, Pattanaik, Reinhard'02 y Reinhard'04.

Luminance HDR features support for a wide range of formats including OpenEXR (extension: exr); Radiance RGBE (extension: hdr) and Tiff formats.

As labor saving as Luminance HDR is, it still requires quite a lot of time to get the most out of it. There are many settings and advanced functions that most non-photography professionals won't feel comfortable with.

Overall though, Luminance HDR is a very good application for enhancing your images especially where light exposures are poor.

Qtpfsgui is a Qt4 graphical user interface that aims to provide a workflow for HDR imaging. It supports a wide range of HDR formats including OpenEXR, Radiance RGBE, Tiff formats, Raw image format and PFS native formats.

You can also register in the author's website and compete against other users. In all, a nice tool with a more than laudable aim, but still we missed some configuration options like the possibility to change measurement units.
